The further we get into the month of January the more trailers begin to drop for movies releasing in the year. I decided to make a list of the movies I’m most excited for this year! Be sure to comment what you’re most excited for in the comments section below!
#10: Avengers: Infinity War -May 4th
Now I know what you’re thinking, “ugh another superhero movie, how many of these can they really make?” And the answer to that question is as long as you keep buying tickets they’ll keep making them. But even if you haven’t kept up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe it will be interesting to see how the Russo brothers pull off this endeavor. Being able to give each of the 38 heroes ample amount of screen time will be very interesting and I’m extremely excited how it goes.
#9: The 15:17 to Paris- February 9th
Clint Eastwood direct’s this real life tragedy with the real heroes portraying themselves in this film. The risk of choosing non actors to play themselves is extremely intriguing, although I’m not entirely sure how well acted this movie will be I’m sure Clint Eastwood will release another piece of masterful storytelling that will leave few disappointed.
#8: A Prayer Before Dawn- April 13th
The story of a young British boxer incarcerated in a Thailand prison, in order to reduce his sentence he must participate in muay thai tournaments. This true story is filmed in the actual prison the events took place in and contains Joe Cole, star of one of my favorite movies, Green Room. A24 studios continues to impress with nearly every release and I do not expect this one to disappoint.
#7: Sicario 2: Soldaldo- June 28th
Benicio Del Toro, and Josh Brolin return with out co-star Emily Blunt to take the war on Drugs head on, in what seems to be a not so legal fashion. Sicario was a movie that I did not expect a sequel for, but I very much welcome with open arms. Taylor Sheridan returns to write for this entry in the trilogy, hopefully continuing his run of excellent stories filled with suspense, and shocking twists.
#6: A Quiet Place- April 6th
John Krasisnski joins wife Emily Blunt who co-star in this horror movie with a twist. In what appears to be a movie that will have very few spoken words, Krasinski joined by his wife and two children live in a world where they must be silent or they will be hunted by some unseen monsters. Thirmonopoly pieces have been replaced with cotton balls, grass covered in cement, and they communicate in only sign language, because the slightest noise may result in pure terror.
#5: Black Panther- February 16
Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station) directs this new addition and exciting to the MCU. With Chadwick Boseman returning to play the king of Wakanda T’Challa (one of my favorite Marvel characters), Michael B. Jordan playing the villain Erik Kilmonger, Lupita Nyong, and Danai Gurira also star. I predict that this will be Marvels best, and most profitable movie to date. Black Panther is a film that needs to be made and my expectations could not be higher.
#4: Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot- May 11th
The true story about a cartoonist who, after an accident at 21 was paralyzed from the waist down. An alcoholic who was known for cartoons that were often considered taboo, and a bit too dark. Starring Joaquin Pheonix, Jonah Hill, Rooney Mara, and Jack Black, with this fantastic cast led by writer and director Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Milk) I cannot wait to laugh and cry through this entire story.
#3: Thoroughbreds- March 9th
Described by Indiewire as “American Psycho meets Heathers” Thoroughbreds looks to be a dark comedy about two young girls looking to murder one of their parents. Starring Olivia Cooke (Me Earl and the Dying Girl) who’s character has no emotions , Anya Taylor-Joy (Split) aas a girl who feels entirely too much emotion. The two seem to be a perfect match making the trailer extremely hilarious, and uncomfortable. Anton Yelchin (Green Room) who has sadly passed away makes one of his last performances, making this even more of a must see for me.
#2: Isle of Dogs- March 23rd
Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Fantastic Mr. Fox) is easily one of my favorite directors. Quirky, funny, and always visually pleasing Anderson makes his returns with one of the best ensemble casts I have seen in a while. A story of a young boy on a journey to find his lost dog has all the makings of a heart-felt, touching movie, with plenty of comedy to go along with it.
#1: Annihilation- February 23rd
Annihilation looks to be one of the most interesting new movies of 2018. Starring Natalie Portman as one of five scientists who enter an environmental quarantine once ventured by others and not everyone returned. The film looks scary, intellectual, thrilling, and very thought provoking. Test screenings complained that the movie may be “too intellectual” which made Warner Brothers debate making it mire crowd friendly, luckily the original cut won and is what we will all be seeing. It may not be a movie that appeals to everyones tastes, but this is certainly a movie I will be talking about until its release.
